How to Handle Whatever the Hell Life Throws at You

If you were allowed to ask just one question to whatever mythical or spiritual being was capable of answering it, most people would ask for the meaning of life.

I, however, am less concerned with the meaning of life than I am with how to handle it. I’ve been having one hell of a time these past few months with traveling, losing someone really important to me, going totally broke, starting a new job that challenges me to step way outside of my comfort zone, and living in a new apartment with new people. I’ve had moments where I’ve literally started crying on the sidewalk, and I’ve had others where I’ve felt like I’m on the verge of something that could be worth it all.

So here’s the thing. What to do in all those moments where you feel like you’re about to break down, or maybe already have. Breathe. Take a moment for yourself. Know that however bad things feel in that second, worse things could be happening, and no matter what you do — what choices and actions you do or do not make — the world will keep spinning and it will be okay. As long as you are trying your best, that is all that you can do, and the rest will simply, one way or another, fall into place. It’s beautiful, isn’t it? The fact that you really, actually can’t go wrong. It takes all the pressure off — as long as you are doing your best and you can learn to trust yourself.

I’m still working on that second half of the equation. I don’t always trust myself to make the best decisions, and I wonder sometimes if in reality I’m just sabotaging my happiness. Each time I remind myself to be patient and trust the process, though, I know it will work out. Maybe not now, and maybe not tomorrow… but eventually, it always will. The rest is out of my hands.
