My Hair Story

We human beings tend to make a lot of assumptions about each other based on our looks. Granted, it’s the very first impression we receive, so it can hardly be helped. It’s interesting, though, that while we so carefully curate our closets, perfect our skincare regimen, and keep our weekly check-ins with our manicurists, that we often forget about our hair.

Your hair can be your signature, your greatest attribute, your greatest nemesis or your biggest neglect. As a girl, I have a lot of mixed feelings about my hair, and I’ve been everywhere from running my fingers through it repeatedly to throwing my hairbrush at the wall, depending on the day. My wash days are quite literally the worst. I spend forever in the shower loading up handfuls of product just to spend another forever rinsing it out. And once I’m out, I avoid blowdrying like the plague since it takes way too damn long anyways and damages my hair on top of it. The result? I end up with air-dried, unruly hair with a mind of its own. I’m talking waves, cowlicks, baby hairs, and split ends, all doing a twisted interpretive dance in completely different directions. It takes a good, hefty hair straightener to comb that out, trust me.

Of course, you might tell me that the right products could solve some of those problems. But living in Vancouver, much of the money that I make goes to my bills, so I don’t usually have much of a budget for hair care. And guys, consider yourselves lucky — $25 for a haircut is peanuts. So between my quarterly cut and colours, I tend to neglect my hair by purchasing only drugstore-brand shampoo and conditioners and skipping out on additional treatments like masks and oils. Sure, I’ve tried my fair share of expensive salon brands in the past, but when I don’t even see a difference in my hair, why spend the cash on it?

This brings me to now. I recently came across a new haircare brand called Monat (pronounced ‘mo-nate’) that promises to fix my split ends, cut down on dry time, increase growth, and overall turn my hair into something that I’ll love every day. Yeah, it sounds too good to be true, but I’m certainly curious to see if it can do what it claims. I’ll be trying it out for a month and posting weekly updates (plus live broadcasting to social media along the way, so tune in!), so that by this time next month, you’ll know the real results and can decide for yourself if it’s something you’re interested in trying. Here’s hoping Monat can handle my hair — it certainly has its work cut out for it (ha, hair pun).

Pictured above: My day-four hair. I tend to wash my hair every four days or so, so this is about as sleek and shiny (read: greasy) as it will get before I either a) toss in dry shampoo or b) do the proper thing and wash it. Did I make it look effortless? Yes. Is it actually? Not in the slightest. Here’s hoping Monat can help with that.
