The Final Days of Summer

So this is going to sound extremely stupid (because it is) but I completely ruined my MacBook Pro in an effort to save $2.

We were out of coffee cream at the office, it was a Friday, and I was sick of drinking my tea black all week (instead of with cream and sugar the way I like it). High maintenance? Maybe, but it was the end of a hard week and I thought that I’d earned it. So, instead of giving in and buying more cream from a nearby store (every dollar counts these days) I decided to keep my cards out of it and pack some milk from home instead. I put it in a little Tupperware container (mistake #1), placed it in my designer tote bag (mistake #2), and then proceeded to put my MacBook into the same bag (huge, huge mistake #3).

As you can probably guess, the milk leaked out of the container, pooled into my bag, and soaked into a corner of my computer. In my effort to save a mere $2, I had to buy a new bag ($200), repair my MacBook ($1300), and — oh, the irony — still drink black tea.

Yeah. It was a sucky Friday.

On a completely different note, it’s now mid-September, and that means we’re just two weeks away from the Halloween shopping, pumpkin-spiced sipping and turkey cooking of October. While there are so many things about fall that I enjoy, I also have some mixed emotions about the season. And while I feel that I should probably put a positive spin on this post right about now, I also feel like I should explain myself.

Girls reading this might want to prepare themselves, for I am about to make a statement that I feel few will understand. I don’t like fall fashion. Or maybe the better way to put it is that I get anxiety over it all. I just prefer the summer styles – they’re simpler, easier on the wallet, and in all honesty more comfortable. All you need is one summer dress and a pair of flip flops, and just like that you’re dressed. Come fall, you need pants. And pants need tops, and tops need sweaters, and sweaters need jackets, and jackets need boots… and it all needs to be weatherproof, add up to just the right temperature, and actually look good together. This translates to me standing dumbfounded in front of my closet with the classic problem: closet full of clothes, and nothing to wear.

For those who can afford to shop often, I totally see the appeal. Fall is, in all honesty, the perfect excuse to go shop to your heart’s content. Browsing through stores I see so many beautiful pieces, but with my tight budget (especially this year as I save for my big trip) I have to be smart. I have to stick to the basics, buy only what I need, and only what’s totally practical. Where’s the fun in that?

Luckily I’m planning to escape Vancouver this year, board a plane, and take off into some wonderfully warm cities – Dubai, Bangkok, and Bali included. If anyone has suggestions on shops that can get me through until then, please let me know! A girl’s still gotta look good, after all.
